When I hit publish last week on this How to Make Oatmeal post I had several requests for the recipe for the Stewed Cinnamon Apples I had as a topping in one of my photos. So here I am, keeping good on my promise to deliver this recipe ASAP!  But don’t think these apples are only good as a topping for oats. You can serve stewed apples hot or cold as a breakfast or dessert.  Try mixing them into greek yoghurt, ice cream or custard.  Or think outside the box and use them in muffins or pancakes.

Alright I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you probably already have everything on hand to make these already.  Here’s what you’ll need (full measurements in the recipe card below)…

How to make Stewed Cinnamon Apples - Step by Step

Peel and dice apples into fairly uniform pieces. Place a small saucepan or skillet on low heat, and add water, apples, cinnamon and maple syrup (photo 1).  Cook, stirring regularly, for 10 minutes or until the apples have softened (photo 2).  Add more water to the saucepan if needed. Remove from heat and serve (see list below for serving suggestions).

How to use Stewed Apples

There are SO many ways to use stewed cinnamon apples!

Pop on top of oatmeal - use this recipe for How to Make Oatmeal or try it with these Healthy Overnight Oats. Stir through some greek yoghurt and top with a handful of Honey Almond Granola for an easy breakfast. Serve with some vanilla ice-cream or custard for an easy dessert. Use as a topping for pancakes. Make apple muffins.  Just substitute the amount of stewed apples for the amount of raw apples the recipe states.

Storing Stewed Apples

Place leftover stewed apples in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.  Simply reheat in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, until heated through.

Can I Freeze Stewed Apples?

You can absolutely freeze stewed apples.  Place in an airtight container or a ziplock bag and store for up to 3 months.

Tips for Making Stewed Cinnamon Apples

Dice apples into fairly uniform pieces.  They don’t need to be exact, but cutting the apples into similar size pieces means they cook evenly. Add in more water if needed.  If you find the saucepan dries out too quickly before the apples have softened, add a little more water in. Double or triple the recipe.  Stewed apples store well in the fridge and the freezer, so make up a larger batch to keep on hand for easy breakfasts or desserts.
